A few months ago, I shared a behind-the-scenes look at another opportunity I had to hop on a podcast and talk about my book, Finding God in the Darkness, wherein I explore the intersection of faith, depression, and the theology of the cross. Well, I am thrilled to finally share that conversation with you today, which turned out to be a three-part podcast with my dad, Mike Gray, and his long-time friend and brother in ministry, Jeff Kelley. Through their podcast, Devoted Discourse, Jeff and my dad aim to share their hearts, minds, and experiences after decades in pastoral ministry. I was delighted when I was asked to join the show, not only because it afforded me another occasion to reflect on my book and the events that precipitated it, but also because it meant I got to record a podcast with my dad, which is always a treat.
This trio of conversations is especially meaningful, as my dad and I got to reflect on a pointed season of suffering and the grace that carried us through it. Christian responses to suffering and sorrow vary in effectiveness and genuineness, but the gospel assures us that God’s mercy for sufferers never varies. Through Martin Luther’s paradigmatic “theology of the cross,” those who seem to be entrenched in the mire of hardship and heartache are reminded that God’s most pointed moment of revelation and glory is found in when his Son hung upon a cross for them. Although we may never know the “why” behind our suffering, even still, we can cling to the one who is with us in it.
I am so delighted to share these episodes with you, with each one clocking in at just over thirty minutes. I pray you’ll be enriched and encouraged as you listen, knowing that whatever storm you may be enduring, the God of all grace finds you in the middle of it. Happy listening!
